DESCRIPTION
Modacare 400 mg is a modafinil based wakefulness-promoting medicine used under medical supervision for conditions linked to excessive daytime sleepiness. It may help adults stay awake and alert when sleepiness is affecting daily function. Modafinil is available in oral tablet form and is used for sleep-related disorders such as narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and shift work sleep disorder
Mechanism of action
Modafinil blocks the reuptake of dopamine by the dopamine transporter (DAT), which increases dopamine levels in the brain and promotes wakefulness. It also interacts with neurotransmitters including orexin, histamine, norepinephrine and glutamate, it reduces GABA activity and also helps to maintain alertness and wakefulness. Its precise target is highly localized, focusing on the sleep-wake centers to boost alertness without triggering generalized hyperactivity.
DOSAGE
Modafinil Dosage Guide
The usual recommended dose of modafinil for adults is 200 mg daily. Depending on individual response and clinical need, a healthcare professional may prescribe up to 400 mg per day in selected patients. Higher doses are not more beneficial than 200 mg regularly and should be taken only under medical supervision. Modacare 400 mg is a higher dose than a GP might prescribe. You could take this as one dose in the morning, or you can split the dose and have it in the morning and midday. It is always important to follow the specific advice of your GP.

- People with obstructive sleep apnea should continue any prescribed treatment, such as CPAP, unless their sleep specialist advises otherwise. Armodafinil may help reduce residual daytime sleepiness in some patients, but it does not treat the underlying airway obstruction that occurs during sleep.
- Tell your GP if you have a history of heart or blood-pressure problems or have previously experienced significant psychiatric symptoms. Your healthcare professional may monitor your blood pressure, heart rate, mood and sleep pattern during treatment.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss the use of armodafinil with your healthcare professional before starting treatment. Armodafinil may reduce the effectiveness of certain hormonal contraceptives, so appropriate contraceptive planning should be discussed with your GP.
